The project “DIS-OTHERING – beyond Afropolitan & other labels” consists of exhibitions, symposia, festivals, panel discussions, performances, a residency program, a mapping of diversity within European cultural institutions, and an online platform.
These diverse formats bring together artists, communities, thinkers, cultural practitioners, and interested individuals to exchange ideas and shed light on current processes and technologies of “dis-othering.”
The concept of “dis-othering” proposes a model in which social identity is not built through the construction of the “Other,” but rather through reflection on the self. Instead of focusing on the perceived flaws, fantasies, or fears projected onto others and rejecting them, this approach consciously acknowledges their realities. It emphasizes embracing and embodying the full spectrum of variables that make us who we are.
The project “DIS-OTHERING – beyond Afropolitan & other labels” critically examines the methods used by societies and institutions to construct and cultivate the notion of “the Other.”
