SMELTING FRIENDSHIP (In Smederevo)

Smelting Friendship (in Smederevo) is a collaborative, research-based case study of the environmental impact of the steelworks in Smederevo. Smederevo is located in Serbia, on the southern bank of the Danube, and has been the site of a major steel industry since 1913, originally financed by the Austrian State Railway Company and Serbian industrialists. After a period of self-management, the plant was privatised in 2001. Since 2016, the steelworks Železara has been run by its ‘strategic partner’, a Chinese steel giant.
