Centroamérica is both a political and personal fresco of the Central American region. Based on the gripping story of a Nicaraguan woman who had to flee the dictatorship, the piece humorously reflects on revolutions, shared futures, and the indomitable spirit of the people.

The Mexican collective Lagartijas tiradas al sol is back in Vienna. Their new piece, Centroamérica, is based on the compelling story of a Nicaraguan woman who fled the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and can no longer return to her country. During the research for Centroamérica, the woman asked the theater makers to bury her son, who had died of COVID-19, in Nicaragua. Thus, Centroamérica evolved into a comprehensive documentary investigation that combines texts, videos, archival material, and theatrical invention with this deeply personal journey. The result is a realistic yet fantastical, political yet personal, and humorous fresco of Central America. From the dense jungles of the Darién Gap to the U.S.-militarized borders, the project reflects on revolutions, shared futures, and the tireless spirit of the people.
