A brilliant border crosser between worlds - wanders from traditional Arabic music and European classical music to open jazz. Rabih Abou-Khalil Oud / Luciano Biondini Accordion / Jarrod Cagwin Perc / Lebanon - Italy - USA

Rabih Abou - Khalil is a border crosser between worlds ranging from traditional Arabic music and European classical music to open jazz. Like a wanderer between cultures, the oud virtuoso and composer, who was born in Lebanon and after a long stay in Germany now lives in France, combines Arabic, European and American music into a highly intelligent melange, far removed from any world music fashions. Unbiased, with an alert mind, high playful and compositional competence and a good portion of humor, he succeeds in an extraordinary way to merge the often contrasting worlds. In this way, he has gathered around him great names from the world of jazz such as Charlie Mariano, Kenny Wheeler or Joachim Kühn, but also classics: the Ensemble Modern, the Balanescu Quartet, the Kronos Quartet or the BBC Symphony Orchestra. His work is so successful that he was awarded the Jazz Award five times in one year; in 2002 he received an honorary certificate for the German Record Critics' Prize for his complete works.

His complex compositions combine Arabic meters and tonal scales as well as distinct improvisations. The result is fresh music, fascinatingly complex, thrillingly virtuosic, highly sensual. Congenial companions and long-time companions are the US-American Jarrod Cagwin on drums and percussion and the Italian accordionist Luciano Biondini.

The Lebanese oud virtuoso Rabih Abou-Khalil undertakes a musical bridge-building between Orient and Occident, ethnic music and jazz, tradition and modernity, and is so successful in doing so that in 1999 alone he was honored by the German Phono Academy with a total of five Jazz Awards.
Rabih Abou-Khalil's music reflects the rich experiences of a wanderer between cultures. Born and raised in Lebanon, he is closely connected to the oriental tradition, which he assimilated completely, but also opened to new influences. Living in Europe, he intensively studied European classical and modern music as well as American jazz. In a long-term creative process Rabih Abou-Khalil succeeded in integrating the diverse worlds of experience. As one of the outstanding instrumentalists on the oud, the Arabic lute, as well as a composer, he has distinguished himself with a completely unique sound language. His numerous CD recordings document a fascinating spectrum from solo recordings to chamber ensembles and large instrumentations. Far away from a fashionable folklorism, Rabih Abou-Khalil convinces with a music that finds contemporary forms of expression from the understanding of different traditions.
