Keynote & Talk: "Let's talk about Dis-Othering"

A self-reflection on cultural identity

“Let’s talk about Dis-Othering” is a series of talks taking place in Graz, Linz, Vienna and St. Pölten. The discussions will revolve around the topic of cultural identity and contemporary practises of “Othering” in cultural institutions.
Artists, curators and representatives of cultural institutions will focus on the regional art scene and current processes of “Othering” and practices of “Dis-Othering”.

The first talk is organized in cooperation with <rotor> Centre for Contemporary Art in Graz.
Jumoke Sanwo from Lagos (Nigeria) will give a keynote about cultural practices and identity in Lagos, about the contemporary art scene and her artistic work as a photographer as well as a curator.

After the discussion a live-set will be presented by Sounds of Blackness [a collective of artists, activists, producers and djs based in Vienna celebrating cultural and ethnic diversity in Europe through visuals, sound & dance].

This initiative is part of “Dis-Othering Beyond Afropolitan & other labels” a Creative Europe collaborative project on the necessary deconstruction of ‘othering’ practices in European cultural institutions. The project consists of an exhibition, symposia, a festival, talks and performances, a residency program, mapping research, and a website, all manifesting in 2018 and 2019 in Berlin, Brussels, Vienna and Warsaw.
