Let's Tingatinga

Exhibition

31.3. - 29.4.2022, Mo-Fr 11 am - 6 pm
FORTUNA Galerie, Berggasse 21, 1090 Wien

Old and new painting from East Africa.
A colorful mix of different themes and styles, united by the joy of fantastic colors and shapes.
While animals are in the foreground in the "Tingatingas" (a style of painting named after its founder, the Tanzanian painter Edward Said Tingatinga), quirky goblins (Costa Lilanga) or decorative mythical creatures (Kipara D. Mzuguno) roam the canvases of his students and successors. Architecture and everyday scenes in Zanzibar's Stonetown are the focus of Hamsa M. Ausiy's large-scale paintings. The young philosopher and artist Gor Sudan, on the other hand, processes "The Bill of Rights" of the Kenyan constitution in his expressive collages.

African painting has attracted enormous attention on the international art market in recent years. In our exhibition we show examples of the lively artist scene of East Africa from the past and present. Perhaps a future star is rising again, like the Ghanaian superstar Amoako Boafo at our 2013 exhibition.
