Shirin Neshat: Living in one land, dreaming in another

Exhibition

26.11.21 - 24.04.22
Pinakothek der Moderne
Barer Straße 40, München

The works of the Iranian artist, photographer and filmmaker Shirin Neshat (*1957) appear self-confident and powerful, at the same time vulnerable and fragile. Central themes of her work are identity, origin and power structures. The combination and expansion of the rich tradition of Persian and Western visual languages characterize the oeuvre of the US-based artist, whose works are the focus of the first presentation within the cooperation with the Written Art Collection. Her most recent work, "Land of Dreams" (2019), also brings together Persian calligraphy and Western portraiture, combining the media of photography and video for the first time. The most important Iranian artist of the present day creates a rhythmic poetic density in her work through the combination of script, gestural expression, and format variation, each of which is inscribed with its own narrative of universal human experience.
