Nour Sokhon

Artist in Residence 2025

Nour Sokhon, multidisciplinary artist and composer, is the 2025 artist in residence at kulturen in bewegung. Her creative practice focuses on exploring different methods of artistic research, including interviews, field recordings and recorded material from an organised site-specific intervention. This research is then translated into sound and music compositions, performances, interactive installations and moving image works.

Part 1 in collaboration with philomena+ (April–June) During her residency in Vienna, Nour Sokhon focuses on developing an artistic concept for a public installation and works closely with Vienna-based artist Joanna Zabielska on a community project. Together, they explore themes such as memory, the archiving of history, and the presence of sound and collective narratives. In addition, Nour has the opportunity to present her debut album Beirut Birds at concerts in Vienna and across Austria. The residency also provides her with space and time to pursue her own artistic projects and to connect with local artists, strengthening creative ties within Vienna’s art scene.

Part 2 (November–December) In the second phase of the residency, Nour Sokhon deepens her engagement with memory, displacement, and forms of belonging that can be experienced through sound. Her research into port landscapes and their social, ecological, and historical interconnections forms the point of departure. Building on the workshop Harbouring Voices, which she led together with Dissident Paths in Berlin, she develops a live performance in which field recordings, voices, and shared gestures merge into an open sonic space. At the same time, she transforms her audiovisual work Revisiting: Resisting Turbulence into a new live version, exploring how sound can make moments of turbulence, resistance, and change audible.
